I believe Holland A. Haney to be the out of wedlock son of one of Benjamin Haynie, Jr.'s four unidentified daughters.

The 1800 census tells us he was living in Bladen County, NC with two sons, three daughters and a wife. I know that two of the daughters were 10-16 and one was 16-26 in 1800. It also shows that Benjamin lived 1 door from Moses Lewis, 9 doors from Capt. R. M. Lewis, 9 doors from Josiah Lewis, 24 doors from Josiah, Sr., 22 doors from Aaron Lewis. There was a 10-16 male in the Josiah Jr. household and also one in the Aaron household. - perhaps the one in the Josiah home was a grandson, even one of Aaron's sons. Anyway Aaron's son Thomas appears to be the fit as you will see. The L. D. Lewis web site shows him to be born about 1779 so he could have been 16 or 17 in 1805, estimated time of Holland's conception.

I know that Benjamin, Jr. left Bladen and purchased land in Anson County 11/14/1806. While Benjamin, Jr. apparently died before the 1810 census and his widow is living with son Benjamin III and his wife Hally, there is no sign of Benjamin Jr.'s son Henry, age 20 or any of the daughters or 4 year old Holland for that matter.

However in the 1920 Anson County census 30 year old unmarried Henry is the head of household with two males 26-45 = Henry and possibly Thomas Lewis

1 male 10-16 = 14 year old Holland
1 female over 45 = Holland's mother - this would have to be the oldest of the three girls in the 1800 census.

The reason I am sure the teenager in this household is Holland is that next door is Samuel Jernigan, Jr. who is the brother of Holland first wife Sarah Pinckney Jernigan. This is when he became acquainted with his future wife. Sarah's father lived not far away.

Contibuting evidence; the name Thomas does not show up in either the Jernigan or Haney genealogy but as you can see from the 1850 Anson census Holland named his first son Thomas. This indicates to me that Holland must have had some kind of relationship with his father who may very well have been the unidentified male in the 1820 Henry Haynie household.

There is a lot of circumstantial evidence here but the Lewis DNA pointed me toward the Lewis families in Bladen. For this reason I would really like to see some Lewis DNA results from the Josiah Lewis descendants.
