Abstract Information

  • Notice of Abstract Acceptance Status

Communications regarding abstracts are sent to presenting authors only. Other co-authors should ask their abstract's presenting author for information regarding their abstract. Presenting authors were notified about their abstract's acceptance status in early August.

Advance registration for members opens on July 12. Abstract presenters must register in order to present at the annual meeting.  Presenters may choose to wait to complete their registration until after they have received their abstract acceptance notification in August.

  • Abstract Withdrawal

Requests to withdraw abstracts may be submitted by clicking the "Access Submission" button linked at the top of the page. Withdrawing your abstract indicates that you do not want to have it included in the annual meeting program.

Presenters may also mark their abstract as "Unable to Attend" by clicking "Access Submission." This option notes for attendees that the presenter will not be present at their poster either virtually nor in person. Presenters had until August 24 to access their submission and select the "Unable to Attend" option.

After this date, presenters should email program@sfn.org with requests to withdraw or mark their abstract as "Unable to Attend."

  • Presentation Preferences

Virtual poster presentations are available to presenters as a part of the SfN23 virtual component. Presentation of posters may take place in person only, virtually only, or both in person and virtually.

Presenters may click the "Access Submission" button linked at the top of the page to update their presentation preferences. Review the Dates and Deadlines for important deadlines related to abstract presentation preferences.

    Review presenter resources

  • Presentation Formats

Abstract presentations are accepted into either poster or nanosymposia sessions.

    • Watch on-demand the  webinar from May 22.

  • Trainee Professional Development Award

The Trainee Professional Development Award (TPDA) recognizes undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows who demonstrate scientific merit and excellence in research.

Applications were accepted June 15–June 29.

  • Sessioning Process

Abstracts are reviewed and assigned to topically-based sessions by the SfN Program Committee.  Abstract submitters can use linking groups to suggest other presenters that they would like to be grouped with in a session.

    Learn more

  • Accepted abstract presenters will be expected to transparently report a study’s experimental design and analytical methods in their poster or nanosymposium presentation at the annual meeting. Efforts to ensure scientific rigor include blinding, statistics, sample sizes, and replication. Error bars should be defined. Biological variables such as species, sex, age, strain, or cell line should be noted in the presentation, if applicable.

  • Themes and Topics

Accepted abstracts are organized into topically-based scientific sessions and Theme J sessions. Abstracts are grouped together based on the theme and topic that abstract submitters select from the Themes and Topics list during abstract submission. Theme and topic selections help the Program Committee to group abstracts; they do not represent the titles of annual meeting sessions.

Full List of Themes and Topics

  • Abstract Length

The body of the abstract should be no more than 2,300 characters, including punctuation but not spaces. Use this range as a frame of reference, then count characters and revise accordingly.

Use standard abbreviations. When using abbreviations for chemical compounds, spell it out in full for the first mention, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses. Do not abbreviate compounds in the abstract title.

  • Theme J Poster Format

For those who submit a Theme J (History, Education, and Society) abstract, note that Theme J posters will encompass three half-days on the poster floor: Saturday p.m., Sunday a.m., and Sunday p.m. Posters should remain on display for these three half-days for casual viewing and be removed by Sunday, November 12 at 5 p.m. ET.

Embargo Policy

Report original research.

  • At the time of abstract submission, the study should not have been previously published verbatim as a scientific article or meeting abstract. Note that interim research products, including manuscripts deposited to a preprint server, are eligible for abstract submission.
  • The abstract may not be presented verbatim at another meeting prior to the scheduled SfN presentation. Some aspect of the abstract must be original in the current SfN submission to reflect new progress.

All authors must abide by SfN's embargo policy.

  • Research within an abstract to be presented at an SfN event is embargoed until the start of the in-person presentation of the abstract — unless the abstract falls within one of the two categories below. Abstracts within one of the two categories below are embargoed until the start of the SfN event’s in-person programming.
    • Abstracts uploaded to the SfN-event virtual platform prior to the start of the SfN event’s in-person programming.
    • Abstracts involved in an SfN-hosted press conference during the SfN event.
