The annual 2024 NIDA-NIAAA Frontiers in Addiction Research Mini-Convention is joint event organized by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) 黑料社 Workgroup. The 2024 Mini-Convention will be held on October 4, 2024, from 8am-5pm ET. The annual NIDA-NIAAA Mini-Convention provides a forum for presentations and discussions of current topics in neuroscience and addiction research. Topics of significant or emerging scientific interest were presented as mini-symposia that describe current knowledge and the use of state-of-the-art approaches in pursuing research in select topic areas, and that enable additional discussion of the implications of the research. The Mini-Convention also showcases research by premier early stage and junior investigators working in the fields of alcohol and substance abuse and addiction research through the Early Career Investigator Showcase (ECIS) symposium. The highlight of the Mini-Convention is the keynote address presented by the recipient of the annual Jacob P. Waletzky Memorial Award. The Jacob P. Waletzky Award is given to a young scientist (within 15 years of his/her Ph.D. or MD degree) whose independent research has led to significant conceptual and empirical contributions to the understanding of drug addiction.

Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) are innovative systems that enable direct communication between the brain and external devices or computers. Neuromechanical models can be used to test the degree to which we understand the mechanisms underlying organismic behavior. Particularly exciting are models of the fly, Drosophila melanogaster, a genetically-tractable animal with complex behaviors and a small number of identifiable neurons.
